Last weekend was an amazing adventure.  Many details had to come together to arrange the 4 days with such perfection....I believe it was orchestrated by God.  Elizabeth and Elaine had planned visit Springer (where mom and dad met) and venture out to find the old Murphy homestead on this weekend, not realizing that it was the same weekend of Aunt Marie's memorial service in Tucumcari, which Trish and I had decided to attend.  Allen (Elizabeth's husband) also had a raquetball tournament in Las Vegas (nearby).  So, four of the Murphy sisters planned to meet in Alb., attend the memorial service in Tucumcari, use Las Vegas as a homebase and explore east NM for a couple of days....one main goal being to find the homestead.

The whole weekend was wonderful.  It was great to see aunts and cousins and other relatives.  The memorial service was very touching.  All the arrangements turned out to be perfect.  We had a great time together, broke all kinds of rules (trespassing and playing ghost in the night... among others), sang to cows, and generally acted with silly abandon.  And....we met our goal....we found the homestead site.  We were overjoyed and laughed and hugged each other.  Hopefully the cows have recovered from our intrusion.  Some photos are attached.

  1. Hi, Kathleen! This is your Auntie Margaret. Bobbie found your blog and sent me the link. I really enjoyed reading your postings! It was so good to see all of you in Tucumcari. I'm glad you had such a good time afterwards and especially finding the old homestead. I was glad to see the pictures, but of course it's sad to see that everything is essentially back to nature. I wouldn't have recognized anything. I don't even remember that there was a chimney on the litle house east of the dugout. At least it looks like a chimney. Did you meet the folks at the Blue Front Ranch? Who owns it now? And I'm sure the cows enjoyed the serenade!

Have fun with that darling grandson, and tell everybody hi for me.

    Love to all
    Margaret
